Audio

We have designed many of the bestselling Audio products for many brands including Bush, Alba and John Lewis. These products include DAB Radios, Bluetooth Speakers, Sound Bars, Turntables and Hifi systems. You will find our products in Argos, John Lewis, Dixons/Carphone Warehouse as well as in stores across Europe and Australia.

Telephony

We have vast experience in designing for the Telephony sector having brought to market in excess of 60 products. These include Land line Telephones (Business and Domestic), Cordless Telephones (DECT), PMR’s (Walkie Talkies) and even Fax machines! Off-Grid Solutions

We have developed a specialism in designing and developing products for the OFF-GRID sector. These products are very often supplied to Humanitarian organisations for use by people affected by natural or man-made disasters. They allow the affected people to keep in touch with important information, or give them light, or a power supply. These products are also sold into the commercial markets for customers who enjoy the Great Outdoors!

Hoot Product Design is headed by Chris Whittaker. Chris has over 25 years’ experience designing, developing and engineering products for many market sectors. Having generated in excess of $350m of turnover for customers Chris’s experience in producing successful and profitable products speaks for itself. Chris believes in a no nonsense approach to design. His philosophy is to Listen, Discuss, Experience and Meet with customers (L,D,E,M) to gain a complete picture of the unique issues of each project. This then allows us to map out a series of attributes which start to quickly define the final product.

This approach has proven to be very successful and allows Hoot to provide a high quality, cost-effective and targeted design service for our clients.

Product design

Background Research

Using old and existing products we highlight the Positives and Negatives of each product. This gives us an understanding and starting point from which to begin and continue our design work.

User Research

At Hoot we focus on understanding how a user interacts with a product. We can use a number of techniques from interviewing existing or potential customers, usability testing, and focus groups to gain the relevant knowledge.

Project Attributes

We quickly understand the issues unique to our client’s products and their markets. From this research we create attributes and parameters that allows us to move forward with the Design process.

Concept Generation

This is where the Pens & Pencils come out! We explore designs and shapes around the attributes and parameters we agreed.

Concept Prototype Modelling

In conjunction with our Concept generation we build Concept and prototype models using anything from either Foam or Card to utilising our In-house 3D printer. This helps to immediately start to prove if a concept is going to work. This allows our clients to get a first feel of what their product will be like.

3D CAD

At Hoot we specialise in using 3D cad as soon as possible. This has many advantages in speeding up development and sign off which in the end keeps cost down for our clients.

Visualisation

Another advantage of using 3D cad early is it allows us to create Photo realistic images very quickly. This allows clients to see their final product very quickly and sell the virtual product to their customer before it has been developed.

Product Specification

Once the design has been agreed we create specification documents that cover all aspects of the final product including Colour, Finish and Materials. We even create force/travel specification diagrams for the feel of keys on a product where required.

Interface Design

At Hoot we have experience in developing software interfaces for many products we have designed. These interfaces have been used in both APP and Embedded software applications.

Cosmetic Model

We work closely with a number of model makers and prototype houses in both the UK and China. The data we supply is used to create fully defined cosmetic models or low production run samples for testing and approval whilst tooling is being commissioned.

Animation

Using 3D CAD data we have the software to create Full HD animations of products which can be used either on a Website or in promotional videos.

Photo Visualisation

We are able to create photo realistic images from 3D CAD data which can be used for Packaging and Brochure illustration. This keeps our clients costs down as they no longer have a need to employ a photographer.

Engineering Development

Having delivered over 250 products to the market we have the knowledge and experience to fully Develop, Engineer and Test the data so it ready for production. We then work directly with our client’s chosen factory helping to answer and solve any issues which may arise before and during production.

Manufacturing Liaison

We have a number of UK and Far-East factories with whom we have developed close working relationships. Alternatively we will work directly with our client’s chosen factories helping to answer and solve any issues which may arise before and during production.

Project Management

At Hoot we take the lead and full responsibility in the management of our clients design projects. If required, we can even offer full project management services to include customer specification, technical reporting, testing, and shipping.
